What is getting in the way of your career happiness?

Alison always wished she was one of those people that knew what she wanted to be when she grew up.

Life seems like it would be a lot easier if we could just know our purpose and follow it from the moment we are born. Then, our college would be picked for us, our degree, our career, maybe even where we live, our income potential…it would be a road map for our life.

Wow, that would make life easier, wouldn’t it?!

The truth is, the average person will make 5 – 7 career changes in their life and go through 12 job changes.

So, this fairy tale idea that we grow up knowing our professional purpose and stick with it our entire life is simply not what the average person experiences.

And thus, just like Alison, we are left to figure out what the heck we want to do in our career.

Once we become moms, this question gets even more confusing…because you add in a tiny human who gives you more purpose and joy than you have ever experienced in your working life and so the fundamental question is asked: should I return to my unfulfilling job? Or not?

Most women want (or need) to return to work…but not to their old career.

Like Alison, they want their work to mean something.

They want to make a tangible impact in people’s lives.

They want to feel a sense of purpose.

They want the trade-off of working to feel worth it.

Alison KNEW she needed a change, so she changed jobs (lateral move in her industry). She stayed for a year, didn’t find fulfillment, so changed again. Didn’t find fulfillment, so changed again (do you see a pattern?)

She finally stopped and recognized her choice…keep bouncing around looking for fulfillment in her industry or do the work to figure out what was fulfilling and then a find a job doing that.

That’s when Alison and I started working together.

This year alone I have coached over 25 women in figuring out their next career move. For some that is a completely different career path, for others it is simply a pivot within their industry and for others it is just a mindset change about their job.

I follow a very simple process to help working moms find purpose and fulfillment in their career. Most women think all they need is clarity, but I have found that it is not that simple.

Yes, I will walk you through a process of getting clear on what you want…but, more importantly, I will help you get clear on what is holding you back from having it.

It is not just the fact that you don’t know what you want. It is also the fear of leaving your industry. The anxiety of potential failure. The worrying about what others may think.

These are what actually hold you back from making a change.

I can help you overcome these, just like I did Alison.

In just 10 weeks, Alison had a plan for when she would leave her job and pivot into her next career. She felt 100% clear on what she wanted and why and walked away with a tool belt filled with practical ways to overcome her fear of change.

Time to reflect: What, specifically, is holding you back from making a career change?

Whatever it is, that is exactly what we would overcome in coaching.

You have choice: keep doing what you are doing or stop, get clear, and move toward the career you dream of having.
