In today’s podcast I am interviewing Dr. Amy Beacom, co-author of the book The Parental Leave Playbook, which helps expecting parents take control of their transition into parenthood. In the book, Amy and her co-author break down the 3 phases and 10 stages every new parent goes through when taking parental leave and exactly how to navigate the transition with confidence and ease. In this interview we touch on the internal journey a woman goes through when they become a mom and the importance of creating a plan for the internal transition (as well as the external). We discuss how successful planning starts the moment you decide to expand your family and some practical tips for creating boundaries and feeling confident once you return to work.
What makes you a great mom?
If you were to write a resume for yourself as a mom, what would be on it? What would be your strengths, what would be your successes, how would you describe yourself as a worker? In today's episode we’re talking about you as a mom, specifically your beliefs about yourself as a mom. When you take the time to name who you are as a mom and what makes you good, work and mom life stop feeling so at odds with one another. Today, I am going to teach you a framework for thinking about yourself as a mom, called your mom-concept, that focuses on your innate strengths and will help your brain rebuild confidence in yourself as a mom.
A new approach to goal setting
At work, high achieving women are amazing at meeting goals, but when it comes to their personal life, they get stuck. Goals like balance, happiness and health feel almost unattainable. I've identified three reasons why high achieving women struggle to attain personal goals and in this episode I will speak about each of them and then offer a different way to approach personal goals so that you can create an action plan that actually works.
Enoughness (rebroadcast)
There are three beliefs that are at the foundation of work-life balance. I am enough. I am doing enough. I am good enough. These three beliefs make up the Enough Triad. When you believe you have done enough, you stop working late. When you feel like you are good enough, you stop needing to please everyone. And when you believe you are enough, you stop trying to prove yourself. At the core of all imbalanced behaviors is one of these three beliefs and in this episode, I'm going to talk about the inverse of each of them and how they create the foundation of an imbalanced life. In this rebroadcasted episode, I invite you to consider making “enoughness” your new year’s resolution.
Your value is not found in your career (rebroadcast)
Today is a rebroadcast of an early episode that focuses on understanding your true value. Your value is not found in your career, it’s not found in being a mom, it’s not found in your successes or accomplishments….it’s not found in anything you do, but instead in who you are. Separating your accomplished value from your human value is essential in a balanced life because it ends the script that is constantly nagging at you to do more and be more. In this episode I break down both your accomplished and human value and give you some tools to begin to separate the two.
Choose your perspective
There are many different perspectives you can have of your year. Some of them will leave you feeling dissatisfied and disappointed, and others will leave you feeling inspired and proud. Which perspective you choose is up to you. Perspective is a choice and as you look back on 2021, I want you to feel good about what you achieved and who you were. In this episode I will help you actively cultivate a perspective of your year that makes you feel good and leaves you feeling satisfied.
