One thing is clear in the midst of this pandemic: some companies are actually family friendly and others are not.
WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC! OUR KIDS CAN’T GO TO SCHOOL! WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO?
The companies that are truly family friendly took it upon themselves to find solutions. Those that are not, put it on their employees.
There is no question that working for a family-friendly company made it easier for many working moms but that is not the real solution.
Yes, the system is broken.
Yes, we need legislation that supports moms in the workforce.
Yes, we need a complete shift in perspective about working moms and what they offer companies.
But we also need to take ownership over our own life and stop feeling like we have to settle for what is.
I’m talking about being a voice for systemic change, yes…but even more so I am speaking of being an advocate for yourself.
You are not indebted to your company. You work hard. That’s what you get paid to do. That isn’t debt.
You are an "at-will" employee. That means you can leave at any time. There is always something better if you are not happy where you are at.
The golden handcuffs are put on by you, no one else. The jail is your own mind. You have to believe that something else exists that will pay you well and make you happy.
The unemployment rate NEVER determines your potential to get a job. Your potential is inside of you and doesn't change. You have to believe you are the top candidate and act like it...because you are.
The system is a problem, but so are we. We hold ourselves back. Mostly because we care too much about what other people think, we don’t see our needs as the most important and we don’t believe in our value.
We can’t always fix the system…but we can always change ourselves. No one else controls our life, our career or our happiness except us.
In coaching we take back control of your choices and stop waiting for the system to change, or the boss to notice or the pandemic to be over. We stop settling!
The system is broken, but you are not. You have complete control, always. It’s time to take it back and go toward the life you want.
