Separating your identity from your work creates balance

When I came back from my first maternity leave, I felt lost. I didn’t want to be in that job, but I didn’t want to be home with my daughter either.

I didn’t want to work the hours I was working. I didn’t want the commute. But I couldn’t just quit.

Besides it being a financial strain, I questioned who am I if I don’t work?

So much of who I was, was wrapped up in my job and being successful at it. My identity was found in my job.

Then, there is my client Annie.

She works at the executive level and is known for her ability to get things done faster and more efficiently than anyone in the company.

She loves to work. She couldn’t imagine herself doing anything else.

Her work is so much a part of her that she regularly works 50-60 hours every week. She would feel lost working any less, it’s just who she is.

The problem isn’t so much that she loves to work, it’s that she feels completely defined by it. Just like me, her identity is found in her job.

So let’s set the record straight, your career and who you are, are not one in the same.
Your identity is not found in your job. It’s found in the core parts of who you are. The person you are uniquely designed to be. You are someone with passion, purpose and strengths that are unique to you.

If your identity is found in your career and your accomplishments, it will be hard to create balance in your life because you won’t put up the necessary boundaries to protect your family and your personal time.

Work will always feel like the priority because who you are depends on it.
That’s why today’s episode is extremely important to creating a balanced life.
I walk you through two different types of value (both your accomplished and human) and show you how when your value shifts away from your accomplishments you will be able to create balance.
