It’s worth celebrating the small things.
--> The approach you took when you wrote that email.
--> The compassion you had when you listened to your co-worker.
--> The pre-planning that paid off because it made your vacation run smoother.
Every little thing is worth celebrating.
I teach my clients that celebration is the outward display of something that has gone well. It can be as simple as a pat on the back or a big smile. Or it can be as big as a night out with friends or a dance party with your kids.
When you take a moment to outwardly display something you have done well, your brain gets a hit of energy (dopamine) that feels good. And then it takes a little mental note that it should try to do that thing again because it went well and produced some good feels.
A few days ago, I celebrated by doing a short Instagram LIVE (here is a link to the video if you missed it).
I talked about a parenting moment that went exceptionally well and how I was able to stay calm and balanced even when I got angry and upset at my kids.
I don’t always handle these moments without yelling so it was a moment to celebrate!
I am a good mom.
I know how to stay calm.
I can stay connected and cool even when angry.
I’m good at honoring my kid’s emotions.
I am a great example to my kids.
All these good thoughts and feelings surged through my body as I celebrated.
But I almost missed it. I almost didn’t take the moment to celebrate and feel all the good feels.
After the situation with my kiddos resolved, I got right back into our morning routine without missing a beat and then stopped myself.
It would be easier to just keep going.
It will feel awkward to celebrate.
No one would know that I DIDN’T celebrate, but me.
No. I told myself. Celebrating is always worth it.
So, I took a moment. Smiled. And took in a feeling of pride. I DID IT! I told myself and teared up as I did.
I am becoming the person I want to be.
I am the mom I am striving for.
In so many ways I have already arrived.
This moment of celebrating represented all of this and so much more.
Celebration is always worth it, my friends.
What small thing can you celebrate today?
