Your big dreams don't actually compete with being a good mom

Life feels like it comes to a screaming halt after kids.

We love our kids. We can’t imagine life without them. And yet, it doesn’t feel like enough.

We want so much more than being a mom.

We want the thrill of setting big goals and meeting them. We want to get promoted and be seen as an influencer in our company. We want to work hard and play hard.

But motherhood seems to compete against that drive.

When my client Kelli started coaching with me, she said, "I need help to understand how to better mesh my career goals with motherhood and not have them be 2 competing efforts."

Kelli had always been full of ideas and goals. She’d written a book. Is a public speaker. Had endless startup plans. Heck, she contributed to creating the Ebola vaccine.

And then motherhood hit and she no longer had the energy or time to give to all her ideas.

She needed focus and clarity. She needed to decide what was most important and determine how she was going to spend her time.

This moment is crucial for working moms.

It is the moment where you re-envision life.

Where you decide that being a good mom has nothing to do with how much time you spend with your kids.

Where you decide being "all-in" to your career doesn’t mean working 60+ hour weeks.

Where you decide that your #1 asset is YOU. A healthy you. A happy you. A present you.

It is a moment where you decide going after goals (whatever you decide them to be) contributes to you being a good mom.

The process of re-envisioning yourself and what you want out of life starts with understanding you at the core. Not thinking through your achievements, but your purpose.

It’s about coming back to the roots of who you are, what you most value, what makes you come alive, what motivates you…and then editing out anything that doesn’t meet these criteria.

For Kelli she decided that her goals were to change careers, start a business and go back to school. But those decisions became crystal clear to her only after she got back to her roots and decided pursuing her passions contributes instead of competes with her being a great mom.

Following your dreams always does.
